The Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society is pleased to present the "2005 Distinguished Service Award" to Dr. Frank Miles.
Dr. Miles is a graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed a rotating internship at Metropolitan General Hospital in Pinellas Park, Florida. Having a diverse background, Dr. Miles completed undergraduate degrees in music, journalism and biochemistry in his home state of Colorado.
Dr. Miles enlisted in the United States Army and served fourteen years attaining the rank of Major. He received additional training in computer science where he has extensive training in Medical Imaging.
While serving in the Army, Dr. Miles was assigned to Fort Meade, Maryland where his duties allowed him to study the human/computer interface in great depth. During this period of time, in addition to his full-time medical duties, he developed the first speaker-independent speech recognition system. He also invented the "single cell electrode" which was utilized at WRAIR in the advancement of studies in the electrical mechanisms of cells. After completing his tour of duty, Dr. Miles returned to Florida and worked in several local emergency rooms while establishing a family practice. He continued to teach medical students and was awarded an Associate Clinical Professorship by the University of Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Miles is currently in private practice with is brother Robert Miles, DO in Pinellas Park, Florida.
In 2001 Dr. Miles assumed the Directorship of the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society website. Under his direction and leadership the site has grown tremendously. Today, the website can be located on over two hundred search engines, and draws an average of 1100 hits per day, more than the FOMA or AOA websites.
It is for these efforts that we are pleased to award Dr. Frank Miles the 2005 Distinguished Service Award for his dedicated service and loyalty to the osteopathic profession.
